My Salvation

“The entrance of thy words giveth light.” – Psalm 119:130

In 1973 I traveled the Southeast, performing puppet shows in elementary schools. I enjoyed the work but was burdened by my sins and had no peace in my heart. I read a letter from my older brother, and understood for the first time that Jesus had died for my sins. It was like a light turning on in my mind.

One day at the side of the road, a young man spoke to me of my need for Christ, and I asked the Lord Jesus to come into my heart. A great change took place. I had a new love for the things of God, and lost my desire for sinful things. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” – II Cor 5:17

The Call to Africa

“...Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” – Isaiah 6:8

I returned to my hometown in the suburbs of New York City and started attending a Baptist church. I was baptized and learned to read my Bible and pray. One evening I heard a missionary to Ethiopia. His plea was for workers in Africa. God gripped my heart, but I did not respond to the invitation.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” – Psalm 37:23

Years passed, and God ordered my steps. I met my wife, we married, and in time God gave us seven beautiful daughters. For 15 years, I worked for a tract printing ministry near Cincinnati, taught Sunday School, and preached in nursing homes. The mention of Africa pricked my conscience, but I told myself I was fulfilling God’s will by helping send literature to Africa.

The Lord moved us further east of Cincinnati, and in 2002 we joined Winchester Baptist Church. That September, under the preaching of my pastor, I surrendered to preach the gospel. God opened doors for me to preach, including weekly services at the Adams County Jail for about two years.

“Then said I, Here am I; send me.” – Isaiah 6:8

In May of 2003, a missionary asked me to go to a small country in Southern Africa called MALAWI. I told him I was not the man. But four days later, during a missions conference, God spoke to my heart very clearly. That night, after more than 20 years, I went to the altar and surrendered to God’s will.

Preparation

“...Let me now go to the field, and glean...” – Ruth 2:2

Five months later I met the missionary at an airport in South Africa, and together we flew to Malawi. God worked miracles. He let me preach to 1,500 souls – at an orphanage, a campground, two different schools, and a pastors’ conference. We distributed 7,000 Chichewa tracts in 12 days.

In April of 2004, I returned to Malawi for 12 more days with my wife, Mary. While visiting two other missionaries with works already established, we passed out tracts in the country’s two largest cities, visited from hut-to-hut in a remote village, and preached in a Sunday morning service in the nation’s capitol.

Deputation

“For we are labourers together with God:...” – I Cor 3:9

The Cassidy Family is now in full time deputation under the authority of Winchester Baptist Church. Three different church planters in Malawi have invited us to work with them. I believe souls are saved by the foolishness of preaching, whether in homes, on the street, or in local assemblies. Our burden is to win them to the Saviour and see them planted in New Testament Baptist churches, where they can be built up in the faith and trained to tell others about Christ. Please pray for the waiting souls of Malawi, Africa!
